POLICIES

EXPECTATIONS

Students and Practicing - Progress is directly tied to consistent, thoughtful practice. It’s more than just “putting in time”, but substantial time is required. Thoughtful practice is both physically and mentally demanding. Endurance may need to be built up over time. All students beyond the very beginning levels are expected to practice at least one hour every day. Beginning students should build up their practice gradually by starting with two or three shorter sessions a day with support and help from a parent. A healthy mix of listening and playing should occur each day at all levels of study. Students are encouraged to practice with a purpose -- set goals for each session. The objective is continuous improvement.

Parents and Practicing - Your involvement in lessons and home practice is essential. Parents are expected to attend all lessons and to supervise practice for beginning students. As students grow more independent and are able to take responsibility for their own progress, parents do not need to be directly involved. However, parental interest, support and oversight are still vital. Parents are urged to be present for recitals and other performances and to communicate regularly concerning their student’s progress.

PARKING, SAFETY AND NEIGHBORHOOD CONSIDERATIONS

We need to make every effort not to cause congestion in the neighborhood. This is particularly important on workshop days. Please park only in my driveway or in front of my home. If this space is taken, additional parking can usually be found on Wiget Ave between Ygnacio Valley Road and Belford Drive.

If, for any reason, a parent is not present at  a lesson, children must wait inside until picked up by a parent. Please emphasize this important safety rule with your children.

QUESTIONS AND CONCERNS

Calls and discussions with parents or students are welcome whenever the need arises. I am generally available between 9:00 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. in the evenings and on Sunday afternoons. Messages may be left with my answering service at other times. Students and parents should not hesitate to call if questions or difficulties arise between lessons.
